1．卵

蚊子的卵根据种类的不同可能产在水面、水边或水中三种不同的位置，水面上的如按蚊和家蚊，水边的如伊蚊。按蚊和家蚊约在二天内孵化，而伊蚊则在三至五天。

雌蚊产卵于积水中。蚊卵小，长不足1mm。按蚊卵呈舟形，两侧有浮囊，产出后浮在水面。库蚊卵呈圆锥形，无浮囊，产出后粘在一起形成卵筏。伊蚊卵一般呈橄榄形，无浮囊，产出后单个沉在水底。蚊卵必须在水中才能孵化，在夏天通常经2～3天后幼虫孵出。

前7节形状相似，第8节背面有气孔器与气门或细长的呼吸管，是幼虫期分类的重要依据。库蚊呼吸管细长，伊蚊呼吸管粗短；按蚊缺呼吸管，但有气门，各腹节背面有掌状毛，有漂浮作用。在气温30℃和食物充足的条件下，幼虫期经约5～8天发育，蜕皮4次变为蛹。

3．蛹

侧面观呈逗点状，胸背两侧有1对呼吸管，是分属的重要依据（图18-3）。蚊蛹不摄食，但可在水中游动，靠对呼吸角呼吸，常停息于水面，遇惊扰时迅速潜入水中。蛹的抵抗力强，在无水情况下，只要保持一定的湿润，仍能发育羽化为成蚊。经二天完全成熟。

4．成蚊

新羽化的成蚊经1～2天发育，即行交配、吸血、产卵。自卵发育到成蚊所需时间取决于温度、食物及环境等诸因素，在适宜条件下约需9～15天，一年可繁殖7～8代。
