The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.

There are three books I reread annually The first, which I take to reading ry spring is Emest Hemningway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating, an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet r time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble about rything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Se Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortazar.

While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.

The next day my huand and son were offered more credits to take an n later flight. Yes, I encouraged一okay, ordered-them to wait it out at the airport, to "earn" more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basil. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He notd this one day during a delivery and ge me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course he delivered more than milk. There was cheese eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order my mother would pen a note-"Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery"-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basil n had a key to our house for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basil from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table hing a cup of tea and ling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk thus it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides milk is for sale rywhere and it may just not he been practical to he a delivery serv.

Recently an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch. Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start ling stories of my boyhood and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the dlopment of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all he caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.

Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to he much chance of survival.
